Finally! At age 36 I am getting my first computer. This was nine years ago. For over four years I had wanted to get a computer. What or who was holding me back? My husband. He wanted to wait even though we had the money. Story of our lives. Now that the economy is not the greatest, hey, I realize he’s right to save money.

I remember feeling excited and being anxious bringing the computer home. I’d almost compare it to bringing home our first baby–almost. When my husband and I were setting it up it was scary. We did not want to break anything on this futuristic technology thing.

Finally the computer was good to go! I remember e-mailing was so much fun. Here I was one of the biggest snail mail writers. I had twenty two pen pals. I could not wait to read what was going on in other people’s lives. I could not wait to write and tell people what was going on in our lives. Now I could get instant gratification! We could send photos to each other at the snap of a button. Wow. Life does not get any better than this, I thought.

Little Timmy was playing tag again outside. His mother was watching him through the farmhouse kitchen window while she was doing dishes. She smiled and thought what a vivid imagination Timmy has.

Timmy was running and giggling as if someone was chasing and playing with him. He had his favorite teddy bear from his grandpa snuggled tightly under his arm.

Timmy’s mother was happy the four year old could entertain himself so well. Living seven miles from other homes made it difficult to make play dates with other children. In three months, Timmy would have a little sister and his mother hoped that Timmy would not be jealous of the new arrival.

Ever since Timmy’s grandmother passed away seven months ago, Timmy has had nightmares. He would wake up screaming and calling for his grandmother. Night after night this horrifying situation for their son ripped little Timmy’s parent’s hearts out.

It was along walk from the village to the fair. Maureen had little Betty secure in her arms as she tried to keep pace with Roger her brother- in- law. The slightly undulating landscape soon made her breathless and the nearest stall was the only refuge for the moment. She was famished and suggested they have lunch first. Several wayside stalls were open and they entered one.

The strong aroma of spiced meals wafted throughout the shabby shop as the perspiring maid served the dishes to the customers. Fatigued and ravenous from the long walk, Maureen gulped down all that she could of the steaming stuff. Roger sat at a corner, conversing with a couple of men, relishing his dish. Maureen knew those shady characters but was too tired to think about their link with Roger. Betty, her two year old daughter was asleep by now. A few more miles and the fair ground would be in view, thought Maureen. Though the meal was a sumptuous one, she didn’t have the strength to move out. Sleep has extended its caressing arms about her and she gradually leaned on to the wall, totally oblivious of the surroundings. Little did she know that the laced meal she had taken innocently would now reshape her life.

“Biig, baad, Maa, Maa, Maarvin,” taunted Billy the lamb, who bleated and laughed as he hopped in circles around the larger bighorn sheep. Marvin’s eyes were clamped tightly shut and he pretended not to notice the youngster. Little Billy tip-hoofed behind Marvin and butted him as hard as he could.

“Aaarrgh,” screamed Marvin falling forward onto his humongous horns, his hind legs flailing in the air.

“What ya scared of Maa, Maa, Maarvin? You’re a full-grown raa, raa, ram,” laughed Billy. “You shouldn’t be scared of anything.”

Marvin cracked his eyelids, but only a slit. Although he knew there was only one Billy, to Marvin it looked as if two lambs were rolling on the ground in fits of laughter. The spinning mountain made Marvin nauseous, and he locked his eyes closed again as he resituated himself on all four legs.

Monday morning rolls around and I am in the classroom preparing for the day. Waylon is arriving at the same time I do.

Eric, first grade, walks in and loudly says, “Good Morning, Mrs. Kris!” He proceeds to show off his stuffed animal he brought for the day. He continues to make up a story and gets louder and louder making my ears want to block out the noise.

Sixth grader Billy comes in with his mother. His mother always shares his mood with me. His mother also carries in his backpack and sometimes a stuffed animal. Today Billy is feeling crabby and had a bad morning at home.

Story by – Story Man

Skydancer awoke early, just a little before sunrise.  The cedar tree he slept under protected him from the rain the night before, but now water was dripping off the leaves of the trees.  Remnants from the rain the night before.  The sky was gray the sun was just barely coming over the horizon.  In a couple of hours it would be high in the sky.

Skydancer realized he was thirsty, so he walked to the stream for a drink of cool water.  Along the way, there were squirrels chasing each other.  Their tails straight back as they ran up and down the pine trees in the pasture.  When he got to the stream, he walked to the water’s edge to take a drink.  The water tasted so good and as he swallowed, the water cooled his parched throat.  The sun was shining now, but could barely be seen gleaming through the leaves of the trees around the stream.  The trees were thick here around the stream.  The water was always in the shade.  Skydancer didn’t believe he ever seen the water glistening from the sunlight.  He thought about that for a bit and then moved to a grassy spot to eat.  The squirrels were still chasing either and chattering, but Skydancer didn’t pay any attention to them; he was eating.  He spent the rest of the day as he spent most of his days.  Traveling around to different parts of the pasture.  Eating, watching the other animals that lived in the pasture.
